Staff are proud to work for the institution and believe they can make a contribution to its success (both 86% positive).

It's an all-round improvement for this Stockport-based housing association, No 54 on our list this year after failing to make the top 100 in 2015. Scores rose in all eight factors, with the biggest gain seen in Fair Deal (66% positive) and impressive rises in Leadership and My Team . Staff at Equity say they are happy with their pay and benefits (70%). They can work flexibly and receive 25 days’ holiday.

Activity is positively encouraged at the University of Sheffield. An awardwinning health and wellbeing initiative, Juice, gives staff a chance to take part in classes from running, boxing and Spinning to yoga, Pilates and mindfulness. Juice also encourages p eople to socialise and offers advice on mental health, along with access to expert help . Health certainly isn’t suffering because of work (69% positive).

Centro takes part in an award-winning scheme, WorkWise, which has helped more than 27,000 people in the West Midlands find, and stay in, employment by means of free travel to interviews. Last year nine young people also got apprenticeships as a result of a joint scheme with Virgin Trains, London Midland and National Express. Staff say the transport authority has a conscience ( 71% positive ).

When it comes to leadership, Julie Fadden’s philosophy is simple: “Your attitude is free,” says the chief executive of the SLH Group. She joins the workforce of the Liverpool-based housing association on “walkabout Wednesdays” to visit tenants, and celebrates birthdays and anniversaries with employees “It is about outcomes, not how long you are sat at your desk,” Fadden says. Staff find her inspirational (93% positive).

As well as managing properties, a member of staff works with residents to grow produce in community gardens and volunteers assist with running a community credit union, which helps tackle financial exclusion.
