Every employee goes through their PDP process either once or twice each year depending on seniority. Although this is an obvious chance from managers to give feedback, they also ask the employee to set SMART objectives for themselves which are then reviewed at the next PDP meeting. The employee is also required to discuss training objectives for the coming period which are then picked up by the HR team to ensure they are booked if appropriate. Employees are given a training budget of 5 days each year which can be used to attend training courses or conferences depending on career direction. After each training course (internal or external) or conference, they gather feedback to ensure they either develop the internal course appropriately or choose alternative external options. They have recruited more employees with real technical ability this year and have noticed that they much prefer to attend conferences rather than traditional training. The company has subsequently sent many employees to relevant conferences around the world. They always have a very busy internal training schedule, covering all aspects of a person's development from the industry that they work in, to technical skills to personal development.
All employees are enrolled in their company health insurance policy which not only gives access to a private GP, it is an all emcompassing policy used for hospital treatment and therapies such as physiotherapy and counselling. Employees also have access to an employee wellbeing scheme, available 24 hours each day and 7 days each week, offering support on a number of lifestyle issues / problems.
The company have recently switched to a new healthcare proviider who have a Vitality package. This gives various discounts to encourage a healthy lifestyle such as 50% off bikes and trainers. It also gives a cash benefit for non smokers and employees can earn points by eating healthily and doing exercise. This in turn gives them even greater benefits.
All projects are encouraged to not only have regular team meals / drinks as a reward for hard work, but to have more lavish celebrations at milestones in the project. A recent example was a team who went to Croatia for a few nights. On a company level, the annual conference is always a trip to a luxurious hotel. In 2014 it was the Four Seasons in Hampshire and in 2015, the whole company are going to Miami to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
