If every employee understands how their tasks are contributing to their department’s goals; and how these feed into company goals - all underpinned by an emotionally compelling primary purpose, an inspiring outrageous ambition and a commonly understood set of core principles they can identify with and take pride in - you have organisational clarity.

In terms of employer brand-building, this is equivalent to having an inspiring brand strategy. In fact, your external and internal brand strategies should be almost indistinguishable, as it's about finding the true essence - the reason your company exists. Your job is to distil, clarify and communicate it in an emotionally compelling way that draws people towards you and keeps your people engaged.

How do we begin?

  • Creating organisational clarity begins with assessing the existing vision, mission or purpose; then crafting an everlasting primary purpose that will rally the troops.
  • The purpose is then distilled into a finite outrageous ambition that has a target date for achievement.
  • To determine how you’ll go about achieving the ambition, bringing you closer towards your purpose, the organisation's values are assessed; and a set of core principles are carved to ensure they're clear enough to guide behaviour, memorable enough to be referred to in day-to-day decision-making and real enough to reflect the brand’s DNA.

Gen Y is particularly values and purpose (as opposed to money / benefits) driven, so communicating a clear, memorable, inspiring purpose, ambition and set of principles is key to sustaining a flow of talent into your organisation; as well as giving context and direction to existing employees' personal goals, departmental goals and day-to-day tasks.
