This year the company ran its first "away two-days". On the second day, staff took part in dragon boat racing. Teams were made up of staff who had never worked together, so that people came together and did something fun and competitive. The evening entertainment included band-a-oke, when staff could sing with a live band.
A running club support to physical health is run by staff. Anyone can join, whether they are a seasoned runner or someone who is just starting out. The company also organises walks around its beautiful farm location in the Hertfordshire countryside.
The company likes to give consistent feedback and recognition to staff and has introduced the SPOT awards. Anyone in the business can give a SPOT award to another employee if they have gone the extra mile. Managers are encouraged to give regular feedback to staff at one-to-ones and in team meetings.

A bespoke management-development programme includes eight one-day modules covering topics such as performance management, leadership, recruitment, self-understanding and customer service.
The union aims to support women within the organisation. Waterless urinals have been installed in the student nightclub and taps that provide instant boiling or chilled water are used in some of the union's premises. Waste paper is donated to the nursery. It has hosted 'Go Green' days, and a farmers' market-style event, where local markets are invited to encourage students to shop locally.

Gearset

60a43081c04f23c7f7bd65d5
At Gearset's virtual tearoom — a continuous video call — staff can join at any time. Channels on the communication app Slack are dedicated to departments, teams, projects and shared hobbies. Last year, the company staged a summer party for staff and their families. Meanwhile, there are drink-and-learn events and beers on Fridays.
Feedback from staff shows that the improved methods of communicating organisational clarity used over the past 18 months have been welcomed because employees feel more connected to what Gearset is trying to achieve. A week-long company strategy event enabled cross-team collaboration and the chance to share.
For the annual Christmas Jumper Day, Gearset supported Shirtforce, by buying jumpers from the company for staff and raising more than £500 for charity. The company also took part in the Cambridge Half Marathon to aid two local charities, Romsey Mill, which helps disadvantage children and families, and homeless charity Jimmy's Night Shelter.

Social wellbeing is vitally important at Everton and staff are given the chance to get together through staff networks. The club has invested in a new social interaction tool, Your Everton, which connects staff across the different sites.
Staff who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the club's values are nominated by colleagues for the NSNO (Nil Satis Nisi Optimum) staff awards. Staff networks and project groups focus on making positive change and shaping what the club does. The organisation says: "Keeping our people central to that gives them a stake in what we do."
Everton is leading the charge for equity and inclusion within the football and sports sector and corporate business operations through its 'All Together Now' campaign. Charlton Morris

60a42fee82899d978c972840
Staff who achieve set targets and champion Charlton Morris's values are being jetted off to Marrakech on an all-expenses-paid trip this year. The company says the incentive of an annual trip encourages a collaborative and high-performing environment in which everyone has the chance to be recognised because the reward is based on more than revenue.
New managers are promoted twice yearly, when they undertake an online management essentials training course. It develops their people-management skills. The company is also integrating LinkedIn Learning into manager development. Directors lead commercially focused training with new managers to enable them to create high-performing teams.
The company has raised £12,000 for the Ella Dawson Foundation, a charity that supports young adults with cancer and which was nominated by a staff member. Each department was set a target and ran fund-raising events, including taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, for the charity.

Sustainable Energy First

60a41c4f644574dd25c3c50d
The company's "balance time" policy is a flexible working model that allows staff to balance their hours over a month, rather than having core hours. It allows people to rest, take time out with family or to exercise, and regain balance in their lives. Hours worked overtime can be used to take time off.
During a learning and development survey this year, staff asked for training in the energy industry and technical knowledge. They also wanted help with personal skills, including confidence, assertiveness and emotional intelligence. The company responded by running its first group coaching programme with an external partner.
Free breakfast, refreshment supplies, bike storage and changing facilities, pizza Fridays, a recreation floor and staff library, make Sustainable Energy First an outstanding place to work, the company says. Staff respond by looking after clients and the community with the same care for their wellbeing.

Street Group

60a43081c04f23c7f7bd65d5
Weekly "donut" chats pair staff with another colleague for a coffee break, and water-cooler topics are discussed on the communication app, Slack. Update calls are made every other day to check-in and socialise. Regular social events include cheese-and-wine nights, pumpkin-carving, competitions, charity events, bake sales and a summer and Christmas party.
A new learning and development structure is being implemented for customer success and sales teams, before being rolled out across the business. The programme has identified training gaps which are are being rectified through training days and courses. A head of training has been appointed to work with line managers and their teams.
One of the company's principles is "stock the fridge", which relates to an all-hands-on-deck approach. If staff see something that needs doing they muck in and help out. In the early days, as a small start-up, it was key and the approach has been maintained even though the company has grown rapidly.
