“Helping people feel confident, make positive decisions and live life better” is the approach healthcare provider Sciensus takes in caring for its patients and employees.
The Staffordshire-based speciality pharmacy supports 200,000 patients a year with long-term conditions, rare diseases and cancer across the UK and Europe. It ensures they can get the treatments they need in the comfort of their own homes thanks to its insights, experience and technology.
And helping people to take control of their health is a focus inside Sciensus too.
Mental Health First Aiders are on hand to support its team of more than 1600 staff. They can also access health specialists through an employee assistance programme, and the new ‘We Care’ scheme gives employees and their families free access to app-based, around-the-clock health advice. It also offers a smoking cessation service, a get fit programme and life event counselling.
In addition, everyone can access an optional Wellness Action Plan promoting structured conversations between employees and line managers to identify any additional support. There are also monthly wellness training sessions to encourage self-care and wellbeing.
Colleagues can nominate each other for employee of the month, with the CEO announcing winners at the company’s monthly Town Halls. They get £150 vouchers, merchandise relating to the value they’ve demonstrated, and a tree planted in their name with the National Trust.
And Sciensus encourages professional development, with its Netflix-inspired ‘Learning Lounge’ letting staff flick through topics, videos and articles with monthly updates.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
New starters get access to e-books giving an overview of the business and offering a secure and quick way to provide their personal details. There are e-learning courses ready to take, and a virtual ‘welcome day’ introduces them to various people without having to travel to head office.
I feel that my manager talks openly and honestly with me
Managers are benefitting from a new development programme supporting the company strategy. It comprises seven courses across a mix of face-to-face and online sessions. They cover processes and systems, how to recruit the best talent, onboarding essentials, wellbeing and equality, performance management, engagement and team career development.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
Staff can apply for £40-a-year charity event sponsorship, getting branded clothing to wear during their challenge. The team has also designed sensory gardens for local schools and planted trees with the National Trust to remember patients lost to Covid-19. And more than one in three employees donated their Christmas company gift to foodbanks.
