YMCA Liverpool & Sefton provides accommodation, support and encouragement for adults and children in need because of issues such as homelessness, addiction and domestic abuse. These services did not stop during the pandemic.

Recognising the added pressure and anxiety felt by staff, senior leaders worked alongside them to help them feel supported and listened to. The chief executive, Ellie McNeil, assisted with potentially life-saving medical care for one service user. Staff who were not furloughed during lockdown one received £200 each as a thank you for their efforts and a contribution to their travel costs.

YMCA Liverpool & Sefton, a charity founded 175 years ago, has five core values: strength, humility, respect, empathy and kindness (SHREK). Staff are asked to consider these when interacting with colleagues as well as service users. They can nominate workmates who have done their jobs particularly well in the fortnightly SHREK awards, with a certificate and small gift for winners. Other rewards for staff include takeaways during night shifts, Christmas vouchers and a birthday club.

As part of its efforts to give something back, YMCA Liverpool & Sefton is planning to develop an environmental strategy. It has introduced a cycle-to-work scheme and another salary sacrifice scheme to encourage staff to switch to electric cars. Also, the charity is looking at repurposing furniture rather than buying new equipment.
