This organisation is run on strong values / principles
It is important to note that, on joining his family’s company, Paul Bentley, spent a number of years working his way up – working as a labourer, site engineer, site agent, assistant contract manager and estimator before being elected to the board in 1999. This experience has shaped Paul’s approach to managing the business – as a very visible, ‘hands on’ leader. For a Managing Director he spends a great deal of time on site or visiting other offices. He knows the vast majority of employees well, and plays an active part in company events and training, sharing his experience and vision for the company and seeking feedback. For example:
E-S-O Events involve site discussion with a Director and another senior employee - providing a mechanism for feedback and raising awareness of any health, safety or commercial issues. Paul regularly takes part in these sessions and they provide an excellent opportunity for employees to speak, first hand, to the Managing Director. Paul’s most recent E-S-O event was in May, when he visited two of their sites in Yorkshire.
Paul regularly attends their company inductions and always speaks at company seminars where he actively took part in an “Ask the Board” Q&A session after addressing all employees.
Behavioural Discussions involve a trained employee observing activities for short periods and making judgments as to whether behaviour is safe/unsafe or efficient/costly, and providing feedback from which individuals and others can learn or improve on.
