BHP is the largest independent firm of chartered accountants in Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. They provide a full portfolio of advisory, assurance, corporate finance and tax services to entrepreneurial, owner managed and international businesses.
BHP has been in existence for over 150 years and, although has grown significantly over the years, remains ambitious to grow further. This ambition is assisted by the technology they use, which ensures they can keep developing their client service. The organisation is one of the pioneers of data analytics, providing leading-edge insight and enabling new ways of working for both the firm and their clients.
The organisation welcomes people who are looking to grow with them, and this provides exciting opportunities for everyone who works at the firm. They pride themselves on the friendly but professional culture and work hard to make sure that everyone at BHP has a say in what goes on at the firm. Partners are genuinely accessible and interested in the people that they work with.
“We are delighted to have maintained our 2 star accreditation from Best Companies, in what has been a most challenging year. The accreditation is a true testament to the way everyone at BHP has adapted and supported each other throughout the year to once again demonstrate an ‘outstanding’ level of engagement. We are already planning on how we use the feedback from staff to continue to make BHP a great place to work.” – Lisa Leighton, Joint Managing Partner
During the pandemic, leaders of the organisation had held regular firm-wide webinars to provide updates relating to various elements of business. This included financial information, remote working, updates on how many staff have been furloughed and returned to work, the reopening of offices, technology and systems and a variety of other matters. Staff have been able to ask questions at each of the webinars and honest, open answers have been given. The Head of HR and Finance Director have joined these webinars when appropriate. A thank you card with a personal hand-written message from a Partner was sent to every member of staff two months after lockdown.
BHP have used Microsoft Teams to share information on managing the work/life balance when working from home, mental wellbeing advice, and physical exercise during lockdown. They have provided access to on-line pilates classes aimed at people working from home. The organisation identified those who were struggling working at home and allowed them to work in the office in a safe way once full lockdown started to lift.
Setting up ‘Communication Pods’ has been the most effective thing BHP has done to ensure that everyone has regular contact with their team, and that Managers can check how everyone is in a more informal catch up. This has helped Managers identify those who were struggling to work from home (for various reasons) and put a plan in place as to how to support those individuals.
