Founded over 40 years ago, Barrhead Travel has grown from a single high street shop to a travel giant with over 800 employees across many UK outlets, including travel agency stores, business travel offices and contact centres.

Barrhead Travel's success over the years can be attributed to the hard-work of its people. That success can be traced back to the company's open-door policy which actively encourages every single employee to have an open dialogue with the senior management team.

The senior team regularly have dedicated sessions with employees from all areas of the business, curating ideation and feedback which helps drive the business forward. They strongly believe that this transparency and genuine two-way communication fosters respect and positivity amongst all people.

Barrhead Travel fully supports 'Responsible Tourism'. They define responsible tourism as care for all workers in the industry, customers and the environment. Ensuring that their customers are aware of how they can reduce their global footprint and take care of their surrounding environment while on holiday is of huge importance to the business. They partner with various industry organisations to help distribute relevant information on sustainable tourism and educate their employees on its impact to their industry.

The HR team are fully trained to deal with difficult situations and to support colleagues who are going through stressful periods in their life. In many cases, they adopt a counselling approach where listening is the key. They also have additional resources available if they need support of external experts.

Barrhead Travel have a dedicated Training Academy which facilitates a variety of training programmes for each and every one of their employees. They have their own programme called 'GROW' which supports personal development at all levels. It specifically helps those with ambitions to progress into management level by offering tailored training, coaching and mentoring.

Barrhead Travel recently relaunched their employee magazine with a new look and feel. They have an editorial team actively reaching out to all departments for contributions and local updates. This has created a sense of camaraderie and has opened up channels of communication.

Barrhead Travel took the decision to remove all single use plastics from its offices and branch network. The main impact has been eliminating all plastic cups at the water coolers and plastic bags from its stores which were used for events and brochures. They have also drastically reduced the volume of brochures that are issued in order to minimise the amount of plastic-wrap waste.
