They were founded in 1905 with the purpose of people joining together to help pay for medical care, when they may need it. At the time, postal workers were contracting tuberculosis and there was no mechanism in place to diagnose or assist in their recovery. Charles Garland their founder, created their mutual organisation in which everyone could contribute to a central fund, which members could draw on for TB treatment.
Their founding principle of many people joining together to help pay for medical care, is still central to their values today. They still exist for the benefit of their members and remain a not-for-profit society. Their mission is to help people avoid the worry and complications that waiting on the NHS can bring.
Their purpose is "together we improve the nation's health," making life better for their members and wider society, by taking the strain off the NHS. They are the affordable alternative to health insurance and aim to complement, not replace the NHS, supporting their members when they are facing a delay in obtaining diagnosis or treatment.
Their employees know that their members are at the heart of everything they do and their drive is to provide the best service they can. They have a great culture and strive to keep Benenden Health a place where their people are proud to work. They know that their employees are what makes them a great place to work and they are committed to keeping it that way.
