About BiU

British Independent Utilities (BiU) is a utility consultancy providing organisations with a full suite of energy and environmental solutions to help reduce costs and improve energy efficiency. The organisation work with high-street retailers, the public sector, supermarkets and hoteliers through to manufacturing, third sector and property investment companies.

BiU was formed over 20 years ago by two colleagues working in the energy industry, with the aim of doing things differently and 'being the best company to work for and with.' BiU is still privately owned and this ethos remains at the heart of the business - BiU invests heavily in time and money to ensure its people have the best experience possible at work.

BiU is committed to recognising employees continued efforts all year round. Every time that someone goes above and beyond and does something worthy of recognition, they can be nominated for a merit through their 121 feedback platform. Merits are collected as employees go about their every day work, when someone reaches either 25 or 50 merits they get a reward such as shopping vouchers, spa vouchers or concert tickets. When they reach 100, they receive a night away for two in a hotel.

The organisation is committed to protecting the environment. They have stopped over 120,000 paper towels every year going to landfill with their new high-speed hand dryers. IT have also upgraded monitors and computers as part of the IT infrastructure updates and as a result the energy efficiency of their technology improves, which in turns reduces energy consumption.

What is it like to work for BiU

They have 2 trained Mental Health First Aiders in HR whose doors are always open to talk through any issues or problems. Management encourage an open environment with the aim of people feeling they can raise any issues with them or with the HR team as stress is better managed when the catalyst of it is shared.

BIU sent 50 x 60 litre recycling bags of card and paper to be recycled vs going to landfill in just 3 months. That’s 3000 litres of card and paper being recycled. They plan to ship their first 30 litre box of crisp packets which will be cleaned and made into plastic pellets to make new products. They have a recycling waste partnership where they can recycle paper, card, cans, glass and plastic effectively vs going to landfill.

Merits are gained by being recognised by a colleague, a manager (even senior managers can get them…) Allocation ranges from 1, 5, 10, for an everyday pat on the back to 100 for something outstanding and a range in between. It's not a race or a competition; It's BIU's way of recognising the everyday brilliance of people.
