Established in 1978, Buzzworks Holdings are a hospitality group with an award-winning portfolio of bars and restaurants across Ayrshire, Scotland.

Buzzworks core aim hasn’t changed since they opened their first venue - to make people feel great through exceptional hospitality, making visitors return to the company’s venues time and time again.

Managing Director Kenny Blair has more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality and licensed trade and has recently overseen the business’ expansion into Edinburgh.

In the weeks before lockdown, the leadership team held a meeting every evening to discuss the next steps and how to keep the team as settled and as informed with the facts as they could. Their approach was never to speculate about what was about to happen, and to keep all communication factual and reliable. This helped to build up trust with the wider team, and they were thankful of that more so than ever when living in a world of extreme uncertainty. A daily MDs blog was released each night to keep employees informed of company news, Government updates and upcoming activities. This was vital to keep employees in the loop when on furlough.

During lockdown Buzzworks partnered with their online learning supplier to offer a range of leadership and soft skills training. Prior to returning to the business, they held virtual sessions for both managers and teams. This covered a variety of topics, ranging from the new Health & Safety standards expected of them, to the amended customer journey. All managers were also taken through a "Care for you Team" session, to help them understand how the needs of their teams may have changed and how they could support them in coming back into the workplace. In addition, their teams completed online learning courses covering topics such as ‘Preparing to Reopen’, ‘Caring for Customers’ and ‘Cleaning & Hygiene.’

At the beginning of lockdown Buzzworks donated £10kto Hospitality Actions Emergency Appeal to support those in hospitality. Buzzworks partnered with Centre stage to make and deliver over 40,000 meals to vulnerable members of the community. Their chefs could volunteer to attend shifts in kitchens with Centre stage and the front of house teams were able to pack and deliver the meals to vulnerable members of the community. Buzzworks also partnered with Alex Begg & Co to take part in ‘For the Love of Scrubs initiative’, sewing scrubs for the NHS Ayrshire & Arran region. Sewing machines were borrowed from local schools so that team members could volunteer from home.
