Huel is one of the fastest growing food businesses in the UK, making nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food with minimal impact on animals and the environment.
In the past 12 months alone, Huel’s headcount grew by 57 per cent and in the 2019/20 financial year they turned over £72m at just five years old. Starting from a small team, Huel now has over 125 people across four offices in the UK and US.
Their head office is based in Tring, Hertfordshire, which is newly refurbished to offer open plan seating, pods, quiet zones, an on-site gym with PT sessions and yoga included and zoom rooms across all meeting areas. What keeps people at Huel is the mission-based, fun, people-focused, non-hierarchical culture, which offers a sense of belonging and purpose.
Huel likes to have fun, with lots of socials and their own ‘amusement alliance’, where three people from each office run the social events for a six-month period, giving them budget and project management responsibility alongside learning negotiation and presentation skills. From day one employees at Huel are supported through a robust onboarding programme and have access to ‘Huel Academy’, the company’s own in-house training platform that sits alongside online learning.
“Our culture at Huel is our biggest strength. And that’s helped us hugely in a year of complexity and uncertainty. So, to achieve the highest rating of 3 stars this year as one of the best places to work gives us a boost and extra confidence in how we do things. We’ve hired over 40 people during lockdown and managed to launch lots of new products - this wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful team.” - James McMaster, CEO
Huel provided managers with bitesize chunks of training delivered over Zoom. These sessions covered topics including managing the wellbeing of teams and mental health and focussed on how to spot when someone is in need of help or support.
Huel proactively supports the mental health of their employees and has 14 mental health first aiders across the business. Huel invests in personal training (PT) and yoga free-of-charge to employees, with virtual sessions available daily. They have an Employee Assistant Programme (EAP), which provides 24/7 support plus free counselling. The organisation also has wellbeing training and virtual mindfulness training available.
