What is it like to work for Kainos Group


During the pandemic, Kainos encouraged managers to use their staff 1-2-1s to emphasise the importance of taking leave for wellbeing purposes. They issued communications reiterating the importance of taking time away to recharge. Kainos were acutely aware from a wellbeing perspective that they needed their people to take a break from work. Clear messaging was cascaded from the CEO in early April urging people to continue to book and take leave to actively self-manage their wellbeing. Leave levels were actively monitored throughout the period.

Kainos exists to make people’s lives better through technology. As a major supplier to the UK public sector, they are immensely proud that their people continue to be involved in a wide range of pandemic-related client projects. Some examples include; briefing the secretary of state about technologies to support the worldwide response to Covid-19, various NHS projects, including enabling people to report if they were self-isolating, video consultations, home testing services and Covid-19 contact tracing. The team at Kainos have also been supporting various government departments with technologies to support, for example, financial payments to those in need, funding for the self-employed, passports for those most in need, food distribution, and to help manage repatriation flights.

Kainos understand that staff perceptions of leaders and managers has a significant impact on engagement and joy at work. As such, they ensured that managers remained briefed about furlough plans, and set in place a protocol which at its core made managers accountable for weekly check ins with furloughed staff to provide Kainos updates and understand their personal circumstances.  They provided managers with an open forum to discuss issues raised through their conversations with furloughed staff. The CEO also sent regular personal emails to all furloughed staff including signposting to ongoing learning opportunities and actions being taken to return them to work.
