Porterbrook was founded when British Rail was privatised in 1994. Porterbrook is a rolling stock operator that purchases trains and leases them out to train operating companies. The company has always had a presence in Derby and has moved to larger premises on Pride Park, just around the corner from Derby Railway Station around a decade ago.
Porterbrook have invested billions into their fleet and now own 30% of the rolling stock used on the tracks within the UK. Not only do they continue to lease a fleet of safe rolling stock, they also have an Innovation and Project team, which are looking ahead to the future and working on their HydroFLEX and BatteryFLEX projects, to help decarbonise the railway and support the environment and sustainability.
Porterbrook have a great reputation within the rail industry for developing new engineers. They support apprentices with day-release and on the job training, as well as undergraduates to gain their chartered status. This is in addition to financial support for these qualifications. This is an ongoing development programme to ensure they have fantastic well-equipped engineers of the future.
The organisation encourages employees to recognise each other through their 'thanks' recognition scheme. This is available within their intranet and so is published for all to see. This enhances working relationships and shows the true value colleagues see in each other.
