About St Barnabas Hospice Trust

St Barnabas Hospice Trust provide end of life specialist palliative healthcare to patients in Lincolnshire.

St Barnabas Hospice opened its doors to its first patient over 35 years ago. Over three and a half decades later and more than 80,000 people have received free, high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care and support.

In 1979 a small group of people with funds of around £270 formed a charitable trust with the aim of developing a hospice. 3 years later, through fundraising and engaging with the local community, these "founders" were able to buy a former nursing home in Lincoln which opened as a 4 bedded hospice.

The hospice has grown over the years into a county wide organisation which includes an 11 bedded unit in Lincoln, a unique 6 bedded community unit within a hospital, a county wide fundraising department, a lottery team with over 10,000 monthly players, 26 charity shops, 2 coffee shops and more.

St Barnabas as a workplace try to listen to the needs of it's workforce as well as it's patients and in particular over the past few years have introduced a number of ways to thank and reward the work staff do, as well as offer opportunities to encourage communication and working better together across all of the different areas of the organisation.

Staff who can demonstrate they deliver service that "exceeds expectations", or can demonstrate how they go above and beyond in living the 'St Barnabas values' can get an incremental rise through their salary structure. As well as staff collating their own personal evidence, there are a number of internal recognition forums for staff to nominate and thank their colleagues for delivering excellent service, or for living the organisation's values.

Fom June 2019, St Barnabas embarked on their brand new Leadership Development Programme, a programme designed for all leaders and managers within the organisation, from Executive Directors to team supervisors.

St Barnabas run mindfulness sessions which are open to all staff and volunteers. This is a 6 week course which is run straight after work several times a year for staff and volunteers to learn about mindfulness techniques within the workplace and in their personal life.

St Barnabas encourage, where possible, interviewees to spend time with team members during their interview to understand more about the culture of the team and also the actual work they will be doing. Interviews are a two way process with the candidates and the business trying to ascertain where best the employee would be working and to understand if the candidate would be a good fit in terms of team culture.
