The Works is a multi-channel value retailer of good quality gifts, arts, crafts, toys, books and stationery - offering customers a differentiated proposition at affordable prices.

Founded in 1981 as the discount book reseller Remainders, the company was re-branded 'The Works' in 2003.

The market position, brand perception and business model has been transformed under the leadership of their current CEO. The brand has evolved from a discount book retailer into a value, family-friendly specialist.

Not only has brand awareness improved, but importantly customers see The Works as 'good value for money', which has been helped by an improvement in product quality rather than simply relying on low prices.

The Works is now one of the fastest growing retailers on the high street and has opened 200 new stores over the last four years and plans to open 50 new stores a year for the next ten years.

The culture of the business is very positive and whilst it has a lowest cost to operate model it also continually strives to recognise the commitment and hard work of colleagues across the business. The majority of the leadership team have store backgrounds and pride themselves on being highly visible and accessible leaders.

Store colleagues are actively encouraged to create impactful displays and to have fun demonstrating their amazing product to their customers. They say that there is 'something about The Works that gets under your skin' and at their core they have a really loyal workforce with a large part having over five years’ service.
