UK Power Networks is one of the country’s largest electricity distributors, making sure the lights stay on for more than eight million homes and businesses across London, the South East and the East of England. This means over 18 million people can stay connected and go about their daily lives uninterrupted.

In response to the pandemic, UK Power Networks supported managers in a variety of ways. These included creating online toolkits to support new ways of working, as well as guidance that managers could draw upon to help keep their teams informed, connected, engaged, safe and well, and learning. Additionally, the company redesigned their leadership and team training for managers – normally delivered internally – to bite-sized webinars focussing on attributes and skill sets that they felt would best support managers through the pandemic.UK Power Networks also transformed their Leadership Conference so that it could be accessed remotely by video link.

UK Power Networks is committed to employees' physical and mental wellbeing. With the anticipation of lockdown, the company’s ‘WorkingWell’ team worked alongside Olympic athletes, leading nutritionists, and renowned sleep doctors to create a series of live weekly wellbeing webinars to engage and support employees. The webinars, which could be revisited any time, were also available for employees’ families.

When the pandemic forced many food outlets to close and restrictions to supermarket opening hours, the company distributed food packs for employees undertaking operational work and provided a meal allowance for employees called out on standby. A ‘Careers Allowance’ was introduced to provide financial support to employees living with a vulnerable relative. 

A new scheme, Supporting Your NHS (SYNHS), was launched to help employees to support their local NHS. SYNHS was a weekly prize draw where UK Power Networks donated £100 each week to three chosen employees’ NHS trust of choice.

Additionally, the company extended its ‘Buy a Book’ scheme at the beginning of lockdown. This meant employees had the opportunity to apply for£30 towards books for themselves, their partner, or children – something particularly beneficial to employees who suddenly found themselves home-schooling.
