About Alzheimer's Research UK

Alzheimer’s Research UK was founded in 1992 and the pioneering work of their scientists is bringing them closer to making their vision a reality. They've also brought dementia research into the spotlight, campaigning for more funding and helping to put the condition not only at the top of the UK’s health agenda but also attracting attention worldwide.

Their vision is a world where people are free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia and their mission is to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025.

Alzheimer’s Research UK's leadership attributes shape the organisational culture, where employees feel empowered and have the autonomy and responsibility to carry out their role. The CEO’s approach is to create an inclusive and transparent culture whereby employees are encouraged to be open and honest through sharing their thoughts and opinions.  An open door policy is operated, along with dedicated time set aside to ensure that all employees and in particular, new starters, have an opportunity to meet with them. The CEO takes time to get to know employees on an individual level and often spends time within the various teams.  Knowledge about the charity, the various projects and also the challenges that are faced are proactively discussed and a genuine interest is taken to ensure that employees are engaged and motivated within their role.

The charity recognises that it is important to enable employees to be able to share their opinions, give constructive feedback and suggestions and also input into specific matters relating to the charity. A dedicated group called the Employee Voice has therefore been established to represent employees across the charity, consult with the Senior Leadership Team and provide an opportunity for dialogue and the exchange of views. The Employee Voice also provide an opportunity for the charity to discuss, inform and consult on matters and issues affecting the charity, the working environment and business practices, processes and policies.

Through the Employee Voice, a proposal was submitted to the Senior Leadership Team which outlines how the charity should consider further embedding mental health and wellbeing. A significant amount of research was carried out by the Employee Voice, and the proposal provided information on each of the recommendations they wished the charity to consider and the costs involved.

The charity has put in place a number of initiatives to raise awareness and provide additional support such as; implementing an Employee Assistance Programme, running a series of Health and Wellbeing Workshops and recognising World Mental Health Day. It is however recognised that the charity can do more. As a result of the proposal and in conjunction with the Employee Voice, the charity has committed to looking at ways in which awareness can be raised and additional support be provided to both employees and Line Managers.
