About Apex Hotels

Apex Hotels is a four star, independent, family owned hotel group headquartered in Edinburgh and operating several hotels in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Bath. It employs approx. 1000 employees across a fast-paced labour intensive industry and has demonstrated sustainable growth as a business, opening a new property on average every two years.

Through significant research with customers and employees, Apex has created an individual approach to acknowledging its guests. It has developed a programme to tailor their Apex Hotels experience into memories and moments they want to share with others. Customer feedback is consistently monitored and evaluated via leading guest experience aggregator platform, Reviewpro. The business continually seeks to improve and personalise the customer journey, with the exec board finalising recommendations that will shape the future guest journey, as seen through the consumers' eyes.

Innovation is key to the group.s continued success, with £1.5million invested to create Apex Facilities, the largest hotel-owned laundry in the UK, allowing the hotel group to take its laundry requirements in-house - ensuring it meets the high standards expected for guests at all times. The Apex ethos of delivering great customer service is based upon recruiting for attitude and training for skill. Everyone, regardless of role, is employed to deliver Apex Hotels' signature ‘Warmer Welcome' to all guests and customers. It is projected that 32,700 entry level roles will need to be filled within the growing hospitality sector over the next five years, so Apex is passionate about developing its own pipeline of skilled staff in order to meet demand, providing opportunities for career development and progression, whilst achieving recognised qualifications.

What is it like to work for Apex Hotels

Their Management & Leadership programme is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" incorporating "Leading at the Speed of Trust". All their Leaders from Executive Team and General Managers through to all 100 Heads of Departments are going through the programme. So far they have trained approx 120 people. They have invested heavily in this programme and internally certified their Head of Organisational Development and Culture and Director of Customer Experience & Quality to deliver this programme internally across 3 days. The post programme feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from attendees and they are finding that there is a common language of Leadership now being adopted across the business that supports the Apex Warmer Welcome culture as well as their 4 core family values.

Since January 2018 they have worked in partnership with social enterprise MHScot to deliver Mental Health First Aid training to Apex staff and the public at their Edinburgh venue. Training explores the meaning of mental health and numerous Apex colleagues have received the training and have gained information on the available community and learnt skills to speak confidently to colleagues experiencing low mental health. Apex encourage open, supportive discussions amongst colleagues and are proactive and determined in tackling stereotypes and stigma that anyone may encounter. Apex have trained over 50 employees in mental Health First Aid and training has been scheduled until 2020 due to demand.

Apex’s first wellbeing budget has been implemented; dedicating time and resources to supporting colleagues’ mental, physical and financial wellbeing. Wellbeing champions in each Apex location nationally are also proposed. Apex were also selected to join a Government funded partnership with Mental Health charities SeeMe and SAMH; in transforming approaches to mental health in the workplace. Apex HR along with a dedicated consultant from SeeMe have completed needs assessments and improvement plans; by analysing current wellbeing support in place for Apex colleagues. The project was based on anonymous feedback from colleagues regarding real experiences and perceptions of working for Apex. They aim to deliver consistent wellbeing practises nationally, free from stigma, to every member of the Apex team.

Each site is allocated an amount of ‘Warmer Welcome’ vouchers, ranging from £2,000 to £4,000 and dependant on how many employees it has. The Hotel managers are then responsible for allocating these vouchers throughout the year to employees or groups of employees to reward them for delivering outstanding service to an internal / external customer. This is effective as it benefits all levels of employees and ensures the employees who are back of house are being rewarded for hard work and going the extra mile for their guests and colleagues.
