About Barbon Insurance Group Ltd

They are one of the largest employers in Lincoln and have another office in the beautiful seaside town of Teignmouth, Devon. Their modern, purpose-built head office provides a great location, as it's within walking distance of the city centre but with plenty of free parking.

At Barbon Insurance Group they live and breathe "lettings." Their business was formed in the early 1990s from an office in Lincoln by a small team who do just that - reference tenants!

Around a decade later, they joined forces with an insurance company who designed a unique and innovative 'Rent Guarantee'. This product was offered to letting agents and would act to pay the rent if the tenant was unable, or unwilling, to pay the rent themselves. Fast-forward to today and this is still what Barbon does for about one in five tenants who are looking to move house in the UK. This amounts to over 1500 reference checks being completed daily. They are amongst the largest providers of references and have two well known brands, 'HomeLet' and 'Rentshield'.

All managers work alongside their line managers to set role specific annual objectives in line with the business strategy and goals. Progress and development is monitored monthly and then formally at the half year and year end point. All managers are rated between 1-5, where 3 is achieving goals, 5 is exceeding and 1 is under performing. In addition to output, managers are measured on how they demonstrate company values on a daily basis. At the end of the year all manager performance is calibrated by the leadership team. Managers are rewarded for their performance with both an individual achievement bonus and a company bonus linked to the level of personal performance.
Their Wellbeing Agenda at Barbon has been live for several years and has quickly become part of the culture of what Barbon is trying to achieve in maximising the engagement of its employees with an aim to doing the right thing for employees.  Barbon's Engagement and Communications Manager has a clear focus to ensure the work-life balance for all employees.  Recently, a full review has been undertaken of all activities undertaken by the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to look for opportunities for Barbon to enhance its wellbeing approach. This has resulted in the Executive Committee in agreeing to award all employees with a Wellbeing Day from January 2020.  A day that employees can use to invest in themselves, work for charity, or just take a day out to chill. The Wellbeing Day is given in the hope that this day will positively affect the physical and mental wellbeing of their employees.

In September 2018 they installed an electric vehicle charging point to encourage employees and visitors to make green choices for travelling. This service is free to anyone using it. They have also just completed an installation across the entire Lincoln site to change over to LED lighting saving 70% of their energy consumption for this. Both of these initiatives were welcomed and endorsed by their leadership team. Despite the fact that there was a substantial capital investment for both, their leadership team believed it to be the right thing to do. Their general waste is taken to a centre where these is a no waste to landfill policy; all large packaging boxes are saved and recycled for employees moving home and they have fun can crushers on each floor. Their Barbon Voices group have been intrinsic in some of their changes including all of their in house cafe packaging being recyclable. Their confidential waste third party, plants trees on their behalf and each year they estimate they plant 117 trees. Although they have energy efficient AC, their employees have requested that this is switched off during the milder months and that windows are opened. They estimate a conservative 20% saving on their energy consumption in this area. Although they have other sites, all employees are encouraged to Skype meetings rather than travel.
