They have reviewed their traditional performance review process and introduced personal objectives that focus on individual behaviours and development. Documentation has been reduced as a result and they can concentrate on one or two key behaviours which in turn support their broader department / business goals. They have continued to offer managers the opportunity to attend London Business Forums which offer a programme of fun and insightful events presented by some of the world’s most inspiring people. They support their managers in head office to attend external specialist courses which are appropriate to their needs, including completing formal coaching qualifications, leadership skills, psychometric training and legal and technical updates. A number of senior managers have developed their presentation and communication skills along with their relationships with the local community by working with local schools and colleges.

All stores have collection boxes for their recognised charities and have collected just under £7,200 from their customers. One of their areas raised £21,900 as a result of having donation points in all of its stores where customers can drop off unwanted items for re-sale in British Heart Foundation Shops. Two staff members have raised a total of £2,500 from participating in the Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim and the London to Brighton Cycle Ride. Staff at the Hull store spent over 100 hours educating local primary school children as to the benefits of healthy eating, in conjunction with the Smile Foundation. A team from head office spent 165 hours painting horse stables, a dog rehabilitation shelter and a snack bar for the RSPCA at Millbrook, Chobham. In addition to the above, Big Yellow also supports some charity initiatives through sponsorship. Over the past two years, the Company has sponsored the Go Dad Run to raise awareness of and funds for Prostate Cancer UK, with £20,000 of sponsorship provided this year to assist with this fundraising. Big Yellow currently has 246 charities for whom it provides free storage at a combined value of £329,793. Since beginning this initiative in 2007, the value of the total space that has been donated to charities is £4,478,541.

The Company has a WOW Awards scheme through which they recognise employees based upon feedback from customers via their Customer Satisfaction Surveys. The scheme enables employees to earn awards on a rolling twelve month basis, with a total of £78,550 awarded during the last twelve months. These awards are made in addition to the Company bonus scheme, under which over £1M has been awarded during the last twelve months across the business.
