The BRE Schools Programmes were set up to inform school groups of all ages of the importance of sustainability and fire science, and the actions they can take to reduce the impacts of climate change and improve fire safety. They support the National Curriculum and the Government supported Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (STEMNET). They aim to inspire children by demonstrating, at first hand, the very latest use of building materials, energy reduction and fire safety technologies in BRE’s Innovation Park, labs and testing facilities. The students are encouraged to explore the buildings and take part in controlled experiments. The programmes explain how students can live more sustainably, help to combat climate change and improve fire safety through simple actions in their own schools and homes. BRE's staff volunteers have been specially trained as School Ambassadors and the programmes attract schools – both locally in Hertfordshire and throughout the country. Volunteering BRE teamed up with local charity ASCEND who help to make a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable individuals in S.W.Hertfordshire who are experiencing social and educational exclusion. Outdoor activities hosted on an allotment site, such as bush crafts, garden construction, organic cultivation are used to educate, motivate and encourage individuals. BRE volunteers visit once a month to help in the expansion of the site. They share their knowledge and skills in sustainable design, infrastructure engineering and community development e.g. the BRE team dug and laid a new mains water pipe on the site ready for mains connection.
