Founded in 1997, the Card Factory is a specialist retailer which deals in greeting cards, gifts and complementary items. They help their customers to express how much they care about their loved ones and to celebrate key life events by providing quality cards and gifts at value prices.
Despite having 935 stores scattered throughout the UK, Card Factory CEO, Karen Hubbard, visits different teams and locations each week. Hubbard, through an initiative called Tell Karen provides her employees with the opportunity to make suggestions and directly pass on feedback.
These direct two-way discussions have resulted in a number of positive changes such as the abolition of zero hour contracts, the creation of a benefits platform called My Card Factory, through which employees can save money on everyday goods, and the establishment of their retail academy.
This academy programme currently benefits 250 employees by helping them to develop the skills they’ll need to achieve career progression.
As well as the High Potential programme which benefits senior employees who’ve been identified as future board members, all 58 area managers attend a programme which is designed to develop their leadership skills.
Mental health first aiders can be readily accessed by employees experiencing difficulties with their mental health and wellbeing. An automatic mechanism is also in place which provides support to employees who contact HR regarding workplace stress.
Following the company’s first ever Store Manager of the Year awards in 2017, a group of around 70 managerial nominees attended a day event at York racecourse, where they celebrated their achievements and bonded with one another.
