About Chartered Management Institute

The British Institute of Management (the forerunner of the CMI) was created in 1947. It arose as one of the recommendations of the Baillieu Committee, set up by the Board of Trade after the Second World War, reviewing lessons learnt from failures in wartime production and logistics and assessing the need for general management to be seen as a distinct activity and specialism, separate to functional operations. The conclusion was the imperative for better management and, therefore, the merit of creating a professional body representing general management skills and which could develop and promote better management practice.

The CMI works with business and education to inspire people to unleash their potential and become skilled, confident and successful managers and leaders. In fact, CMI has more than 60,000 people training to be better leaders right now across their partnership network in the UK and internationally. Backed by their Royal Charter, CMI is the only organisation able to award 'Chartered Manager status' - the ultimate management accolade, which is proven to boost individuals’ career prospects, management capability and impact in the workplace. CMI’s thought leadership, research, events and online resources provide practical insight about critical issues for its 100,000 plus members and any professional looking to improve their results; create diverse high-performing teams and nurture the next generation of managers and leaders.

All staff are encouraged to work collaboratively across the business, giving opportunities to input and to learn from cross functional teams who have clear objectives and outcomes. All Colleagues have access to their online management portal which underpins much of their guidance on management techniques and practices. In addition further qualifications if appropriate can be explored. They have a Mentoring scheme in place for all staff with external coaching available as and when required. They also support staff by funding the membership fees for 1 other professional body that aligns to their development.
They have a flexible working approach and actively encourage staff not to work long hours to give them a meaningful work life balance. They encourage staff to use their Employee Assistance Programme if needed where they can get independent professional advice on a number of matters related to both work and home. They have an occupational health advisor who visits every 6 weeks and staff can arrange a confidential appointment if required. 

The office environment includes break out areas and they have outside seating areas that can be used in their very pretty 5 acres of grounds. They also have access to the HSE stress assessment process when required. They have a space that is designed to allow colleagues to hold informal meetings, get together socially and relax in a open and friendly atmosphere.

My Team
Over the last year Chartered Management Institute have ensured that all colleagues have the opportunity to attend a quarterly directorate day. Teams are empowered to organise and deliver parts of the day bringing new ideas, and promoting cross team relationship building. Their CEO is passionate about collaborative ways of working, she encourages staff to get involved in cross functional activities, project and working groups. Over the last year they have introduced an 'Immersion Day' that new starters get invited to, they meet with all the Executive Leadership team, get an overview of the whole business and how it fits with their individual roles. 
Their senior leadership team truly recognise the benefit of bringing people together, and believe this is a major contribution to the success of the organisation. They use the intranet and digital communication tools to encourage discussion groups, sharing information and team/personal profiles.
In 2019, their CEO launched a regular monthly listening group called Town-Hall. It is hosted, on a rotating basis, by their CEO, Exec Leadership Team and Senior Leadership Team. Colleagues get the opportunity to ask direct questions either at the meeting or in advance. In 2019 they have ran 5 sessions, feedback from colleagues is positive and actions have been taken as a result of the questions and feedback.
