IS HAPPINESS TRAINING from chief executive David Pollock the secret behind the success of Chess? At sessions that are described by attendees as “life-changing”, Pollock explains how you can choose your attitude to life and that happiness brings success, rather than the other way round.
His example wins Pollock our special award for Best Leader this year. Chess, an IT and communication services provider based in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, recorded positive scores of 90% or more for 20 of the 70 questions on our survey.
The company promotes a healthy-body, healthy-mind mentality, and provides free breakfasts, massages, dental and optical plans and private medical insurance. If a member of staff wants to give up smoking, financial backing is available to support them.
The 457 employees feel supported by their managers, (a 91% positive score, ranked first), who they say would be quick to respond if anyone seemed stressed (86%, first). There are numerous sports to get involved in and charitable endeavours are high on the agenda. Events such as the Manchester 10k and the annual dragon boat race attract wide participation.
The Prince’s Trust, helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds find employment, is the firm’s official charity but Chess matches up to £100 of money raised by employees for any charity. Staff feel that their interest in good causes is encouraged (98%) and say the company operates on strong principles (93%).
