Mission: To be the retirement housebuilder of choice for an independent, secure and fulfilling lifestyle. Vision: To be the most successful housebuilder in the UK.
LAST YEAR was the most successful yet for this Hampshire-based retirement housebuilder, which recorded a pre-tax profit of £57m, up tenfold in five years. Launched in 1994 to build thatched cottages under the Emlor Homes banner, the company switched focus six years later to build one- and two-bedroom retirement apartments as Churchill Retirement Living.
The care for both the elderly and its 341 employees is at the very core of the organisation. There is a real sense of family across all 50 of its sites (an 81% positive score), and staff can nominate colleagues for Churchill Heroes awards worth £250 every quarter.
The care was reciprocated last March when staff recorded a surprise 50th birthday video for chairman Spencer McCarthy —they even got his family in on the act. People are confident in his leadership (82%) and believe he runs the firm based on moral principles (82%).
Last year the Churchill Foundation was launched to help staff give to local communities. Its first fundraiser went off with a bang, literally: a clay pigeon shooting challenge raised £116,000.
