The idea for ClinPhone was born during a medical crisis, when a girl accidentally overdosed on her father’s medication. Because it was the weekend and he had been involved in a blind trial, the doctors treating her had problems finding out what the drug was. Fortunately, she survived, but Jonathan Engler and Neil Rotherham, two of the drug development managers involved, decided to find a way to provide 24-hour access to clinical research data.


In 1993, they launched the ClinPhone Group in Nottingham offering telephone and internet-based technology to help manage and co-ordinate clinical trials.





The firm has profit-related, Christmas and team performance bonuses. It also offers a non-contributory pension and a share incentive plan.





The directors are keen to encourage a healthy workforce: they supply free fruit, hot drinks and cereal, and free or subsidised gym membership. Employees’ spiritual needs are also taken into account, with a prayer room. Just under four in five staff feel able to take all 25 days of annual holiday and they say work does not adversely affect their health.





Michael Wain, a service support associate, put in 21 hours of overtime to clear a backlog of helpdesk calls: “Not only did we get the bonus but Neil and Jonathan sent an e-mail saying thank you and our operations director came round with beer and cream cakes.”
