About Cumberland Building Society

Cumberland Building Society provides all types of financial services to individuals and businesses, including residential and commercial mortgages, personal and business current accounts, investments and savings, vehicle finance and insurance.

On 16th April 1850, more than 1,000 people came together to form the Cumberland Co-operative Land and Benefit Building Society in Carlisle. Their main objective was to provide a means whereby the ‘industrious classes’ could acquire property - this is something that continues today.

Over the last century, the building society has opened up in branches in Cumbria, South West Scotland, West Northumberland and North Lancashire, striving to be the natural choice for financial services, while continuing to be an independent mutual building society. Their long-term strategy is to put their members first by developing direct relationships with them.

Chief Executive Des Moore joined Cumberland Building Society in April 2018 with over 30 years’ experience in retail and commercial banking.
