About Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK are a charity that are leading the fight against the most devastating and fastest-growing health crisis of modern times, with the ambition of creating a world where diabetes can do no harm.

Their mission is that by bringing people together to work in partnership, they will support those living with diabetes, prevent Type 2, make research breakthroughs in diabetes and ultimately find a cure.

In 2018 they worked hard to improve their employee engagement and reduce staff turnover by introducing a range of initiatives. These included bringing in clear job bands and salaries, better reward and recognition, learning and management development programmes, a reduction in fixed term contract roles, a colleague forum and flexible working. These changes have reduced turnover from 39.9% to 30.2% and attrition from 24.6% to 17.9%.

They offer a number of ongoing support options for managers. These include one-to-one coaching, action learning sets and a mentoring scheme that managers can apply to. In addition they offer a range of e-learning modules on management and leadership.

They hold a two-day induction for all new starters where they are taught about the company’s six strategic aims. At the end, new employees are asked to reflect on how they will contribute to that aim through their role, bringing the vision alive for every colleague.

In 2017 they introduced three new reward and recognition schemes to help them be able to continuously and immediately reward and recognise exceptional performance; demonstrate that awards could be made fairly and transparently; and recognise that different staff contribute in very different ways.
