Halfords are the UK’s leading retailer of automotive and cycling products, and a leading operator in car servicing and repairs. The company have more than 10,000 staff in more than 460 shops and over 300 Autocentres.
A billion-pound business, Halfords sell more than one million bikes every year. Their national reach is such that 90% of the UK is never more than 20 minutes away from a Halfords store or Autocentre.
The company was founded by Frederick Rushbrooke in Birmingham in 1892 as a wholesale ironmongery. In 1902, Rushbrooke moved to a store on Halford Street in Leicester, from which the company took its name and began selling cycling goods.
Today, Halfords employ around 11,000 staff under Chief Executive Officer Jill McDonald. Their vision involves working as a team to support drivers of every car, inspire cyclists of every age and equip families for their leisure time.

Staff on the ‘Aspire to Assistant/Store Manager’ programmes have an internal dedicated coach who they meet every eight weeks and a job placement in the role they want. Delegates complete a business-improvement project, which they present to the Retail Director and implement.
Halfords hold an annual wellbeing week, including talks from the world of wellbeing, nutrition and health. They run a cycle-to-work scheme and there’s a boot camp for support-centre staff, who donate £5 per session to the NSPCC.

Every Sunday, a group of Store and Area Managers hold a trading feedback call, discussed by the senior team at the support centre on Monday morning. There are also huddles, away days and conferences have a fun theme.
