The leader of Hastings Direct is extremely passionate about the people, by involving individuals and teams and showing them that they can really make a difference. He champions the staff survey and is very close to the detail on how people feel and supports the necessary changes to really make Hastings Direct a great place to work. He is visible (always on the call centre floor talking to staff) and approachable, always willing to listen to new ideas and ways of working. He also champions the back to the floor mentality always encouraging the leaders of the business to get close to the action so they can make a difference to the staff and customers. He also personally chairs the staff communications forum and has done so since it started two years ago. I think it is testamant that the majority of staff in the business will have met the leader personally which really shows staff that they are all in it together.
Staff across the business are invited to apply for the fast track development scheme 'The Hastings Way Forward' aimed at pulling the best from their people. 75% of staff on this development scheme have been promoted during this scheme.
Hastings Direct had an employee engagement event called their "WOW" (Ways of Working) event in July 2011. The idea was to invite all of the staff to an internal fair which gave an insight into key engagement initiatives. They had lots of interactive experiences for staff to get involved in which were designed to increase awareness and highlight opprtunities within the business. For example they had a career development area where staff could take a golden ticket which guaranteed them time in an area of interest and to shadow someone to get a feel for what they did and help them build a career path or they could play Rock Band with their colleagues highlighting the importance of teamwork.
