About Hickory's Smokehouse

Hickory’s Smokehouse are a small group of authentic, barbecue-style restaurants that live and breathe the values of the American Deep South.

The restaurant chain, with multiple sites across Merseyside, Deeside and the Midlands, employs 526 staff and was founded in 2008 by Neil McDonnell. By 2014, the firm had three sites but secured a £6m investment to open a further ten restaurants.

Hickory’s Smokehouse isn’t so much a restaurant chain as a philosophy. It’s inspired by the open-hearted service style and delicious barbecue food of Southern USA.

The team criss-crosses South America in search of new menus. What they’ve also found is the generosity and warmth of the Southern people, and they’ve brought that state of mind back to the UK.

The five stars next to the name represent five values that are incorporated into the Hickory’s Smokehouse experience. They include authentic and quirky, which could mean free popcorn on arrival or ‘build your own’ frozen custard for kids.

What is it like to work for Hickory's Smokehouse

Leadership

All senior management cover shifts, work the floor and demonstrate the lack of hierarchy in the business. The five stars values are cascaded from the top and feed into everything.
Personal Growth
Personal Growth
Everyone has a career path and the firm takes interest in long-term aspirations. A server is now an events manager; a busser is now an HR advisor, and an assistant manager is now in accounts. They’re supported by external qualifications.
Giving Something Back
Giving Something Back
Cycle to work has been taken up by around 10 employees. Events include Duck Race Chester, an RNLI event in West Kirby, and a car rally in Rhos-on Sea. And £1 of all Campfire Marshmallows sold in each venue goes to Cash for Kids.
