THE PROLIFERATION OF travel sites on the internet has led Kuoni to set itself apart by concentrating on “exceptional” service. The UK subsidiary of what is now a German-owned business was founded in 1965 and specialises in luxury tours, with the philosophy that no two holidays should be the same. It has its headquarters in Dorking, Surrey, and there are 48 agencies nationwide.
Managing director Derek Jones last year initiated an extensive engagement survey that canvassed all 490 employees. In response to the feedback, brunches have been introduced that give representatives from all levels of the business the opportunity to chat with the leadership team about any topics affecting the workplace. In turn, staff feel valued by their bosses, who they say share important information (79% positive) and talk openly with them (83%).
“We aim to promote internally so we look at opportunities to develop our staff with progression, new projects and secondments,” the company says. The result is that employees have a great deal of faith in their immediate managers, and believe that they genuinely care about them as people (82%).
