A key element of the Linklaters "Deal" is offering their employees opportunities for learning and development. The Linklaters Law and Business School provides a framework for professional development in the firm, enabling employees to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to operate at the top of their profession. Everyone has access to a comprehensive range of learning activities, including milestone programmes at each stage of their development. Over the last year they have continued with their Engaging People Programme which is designed to showcase role models within the business. The programme is based upon a seminar format where lunchtime sessions have been run with topics ranging from the environment to flexible working. It is hoped that by giving people the opportunity to learn more about the different roles and experiences on offer at Linklaters it will allow them to understand the importance of their own particular role. The Global Talent Programme targets the “high potential” business services advisors, with the aim of developing a globally aware, cross-functional group of future leaders across the firm. The programme was introduced as an innovative way to recognise the talent that exists and provide them with opportunities that tailors their development to their personal needs and to the ambitions of the firm and manages succession planning effectively and support internal promotion across all global business services.

Globally, they have a Corporate Responsibility Committee. Each member champions environmental issues in their respective regions by giving such as presentations and support for environmental initiatives. In the UK they have a team of forty one environmental champions who represent a group and or a floor, this team is co-ordinated by the Environmental Practitioner. In November 2009 they made the shift to Bin the Bin which is a scheme designed to increase recycling by replacing standard desk side bins used by each employee with localised waste and recycling points. All construction waste is sorted and recycled and where possible and all furniture procured is made from recycled content. They also support the local community for example through their work in education in Hackney. Social mobility is a significant challenge for the professions and, through a range of activities, they try to inform and inspire the aspirations of young people near to their office.

All employees have individual annual appraisals, mid-year reviews and performance discussions throughout the year through which individual achievements and efforts are recognised. Team and individual achievements are recognised locally at regular team, group and functional meetings, as well as more widely in office-wide or global communications. Employees are given continuous feedback, for example, in the Linklaters’ weekly bulletin. The Senior Partner and other leaders in the firm regularly send “praise notes” to individual members of staff in recognition of their efforts and successes. Many employees are also rewarded by an individual performance related bonus that recognises their individual contribution and performance, as well as being eligible for an annual profit related bonus that rewards staff for the firm’s performance and allows them to share in the firm’s success.
