About Mayflower Theatre Trust

Southampton’s the Mayflower Theatre is the biggest theatre on the south coast, bringing a diverse range of shows from West End musicals to dance, opera, drama, ballet and comedy.

The business’s objective is to preserve and maintain the theatre for the community and provide a diverse programme of quality art experiences, and to be a nationally recognised theatre in providing inspiring experiences to our customers.

Mayflower believes its success depends on a series of factors, but is underpinned by its staff. All employees have a great passion for theatre and are committed, dedicated and show tremendous expertise in their areas of responsibility.

Chief Executive Michael Ockwell is passionate about people and empowering them to do their best. He aims to be approachable and friendly with all staff. Michael created Engage - the theatre’s community and education department with its outreach programme, while his introduction of youth theatre shows his dedication to making the theatre accessible.

What is it like to work for Mayflower Theatre Trust

Mental health wellbeing has been identified as a key HR objective for 2017/18, and a number of courses for managers are in place to support this and increase their awareness of the issues when managing staff with mental health issues.

Once the auditorium refurbishment is completed in 2018, efforts will be put into creating the Mayflower Academy, which offers educational opportunities for young people who want a career in theatre - whether that be stage, theatre or event management, as well as performing arts.

Mayflower Theatres believes it is important that all staff can see shows to experience them for themselves and talk about them to customers. For this reason, all staff are encouraged to go to see shows regularly, and permanent employees receive six pairs of complementary tickets per year.
