LAST YEAR WAS good for law firm Mills & Reeve, which produced a record turnover of £87.2m and a £1.28m bonus pool for staff, up £900,000 on the previous 12 months. Everybody receives the same portion — pro rata for new arrivals and part-timers — regardless of seniority.
The partnership has come a long way since it was founded in Norwich by Henry Mills and Edmund Reeve in 1880. Now based in London, it has 901 employees with offices in Norwich, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Cambridge. It acts for UK universities and covers sectors from health and insurance to charities, food and beverage and sport.
“Strategy is not something that is done to you but something you are part of”, says managing partner Claire Clarke, who involved a range of colleagues in preparing a new 2020 business plan. Employees have confidence in the skills of senior leaders (81% positive) and think the business is run on strong principles (81%).
The firm also focuses on its social responsibilities, with staff saying support of good causes is encouraged (86%). A charitable trust, funded by donations from partners, distributes almost £90,000 to help those “on the edge of society”.
