As a publically funded organisation NHS Improvement is not permitted to spend taxpayers' money on the provision of social events for staff.
NHS Improvement has devoted considerable attention to ensuring that the views, ideas and feedback of its staff are taken into consideration and responded to appropriately. An all staff 'Valuing Staff' survey was initiated in 2008 and has been repeated regularly thereafter and a range of positive actions implemented in response. As a national organisation with staff living across England, it has been important to develop a range of formal and informal means of communication and to maximise technological systems in addition to regular meetings - there being a need to balance staff travelling time with the effective and efficient use of public resources whilst simultaneously taking account of staff health, safety and wellbeing . As a nationally based organisation, information technology is deployed to maximum advantage to facilitate effective communication between all staff - e.g. conference calls , webex sessions and on line forums. The National Director has a Q and A mailbox that enables staff to pose anonymous questions to which answers are posted for all to see and thereby to share information. The Executive Team monitors and considers carefully the formal and informal feedback and messages from all staff to ensure that issues are addressed and actions taken as appropriate
NHS Improvement offers up to nine staff per annum the opportunity to attend and (if selected to present a poster) a major international healthcare improvement conference - this includes funding for travel and accommodation. Staff are required to make a presentation to share their learning to colleagues following their return thereby sharing international news and developments in the field of healthcare. In addition, news and updates of successful initiatives and staff achievements are communicated via the fortnightly staff bulletin, monthly national team meetings and the website in order to recognise staff, to celebrate their success and to share learning.
