Mission: To be a really inspiring company welcoming people in communities. Vision: To build the best pub company in the world.
WITH A RISE of 34 places from last year’s position, Oakman Inns & Restaurants enters the ranks of the top 10 Best Companies To Work For. Its Best Improver award will look good on any of its bars.
Peter Borg-Neal, the chief executive, founded the business in 2005. His first pub was the Akeman in Tring. He started in the pub trade as a 16-year-old cellar boy and still does the occasional kitchen shift. He would be proud, he has said, to hand over eventually to somebody who has worked their way up from the bottom. As this chain of 16 pubs in the home counties maintains an internal promotion rate of 80%, that’s more than likely.
The “Oakmanology” training scheme is of great personal benefit, staff say, scoring 82% positive (fourth among mid-size companies). They also find their jobs good for personal growth (85%, eighth). Oakman ranks third for managers regularly showing appreciation for good work (85%), caring about staff job satisfaction (82%) and motivating teams to give their best every day (79%).
All 16 pubs close for Oakfest, the company’s annual music festival, and pub teams organise their own nights out. Employees have plenty of fun together (87%) and say they feel a sense of family (83%).
