About Pelican Business Services

Bristol-based Pelican work as trusted partners, adding value for utilities-based clients by handling their billing, collections and customer relations.

Pelican began in 2001 as Bristol Wessex Billing Services Ltd, established as a joint-venture company to manage Bristol Water and Wessex Water’s metering, billing and collection operations, and to serve as a point of contact for customer enquiries.

Today, Pelican have hundreds of employees, are highly skilled in every area of the business and deliver award-winning customer service. Charley Maher is the Managing Director and Alex Chapman the Chief Executive Officer.

Driving it all are an established set of values that define what the firm stands for: expert, trusted, engaging and helpful. They’ve been shaped by the company’s history, the work they do and by the experiences of the team members.

Pelican reward their staff with a £500 salary-increments system for initiatives such as becoming a subject-matter expert, taking on additional responsibilities or exceeding performance objectives.

Monthly fancy dress days support the firm’s quarterly charity. Every team member makes an effort to dress up themselves (or decorate their office). Charley judges ‘best dressed individual’ and ‘best decorated office’ and proudly presents a prize at the end of the day.

The health and wellbeing committee create an annual health-and-wellbeing charter at the beginning of each year. Themes have included Aloha Month, 10k May and Pelican Pedallers (to encourage cycling). A dress-down day at the end of each themed month celebrates the success.

There’s an increments system for increasing team members’ salaries. Each increment is a £500 increase in salary with a maximum of three increments available per role. Staff say it helps them stand out from their colleagues in terms of being rewarded for displaying effort.
