About Penna

What is it like to work for Penna

Penna’s values and family culture are very important to them and are embedded in the way they work throughout the organisation. The Senior Leaders, fondly nicknamed the Music Makers, lead by the values and also lead by example. The company share all business performance data through business briefings and everyone attends a team meeting every month. Everyone also has a one to one review session every month. Penna’s Managing Director lives and breathes the Penna Behaviours. She is approachable, open, honest and is genuinely interested in those who choose to work at Penna. The Managing Director holds regular coffee mornings for all new starters to get to know people and learn where improvements can be made in the colleague experience. She is a visual presence within the building and works closely with individuals and teams on various projects.

All employees have access to professional coaching and are assigned a mentor from within the business. Penna’s People Manager Group meets quarterly and is led by the MD. This group works together to support people management in the business and to support one another with their people management role and responsibilities. Good leadership is a core tenet of the overall brand, along with the client experience and colleague experience; therefore the company believe it is essential that they maintain the standards of the leadership behaviours they have established. Each Penna Leader is asked to gather personal feedback on how they are performing. They do this by consulting their direct reports and anyone else whom they have led as part of projects they have undertaken in the last 12 months. Managers are then required to attend a one-hour training session where they learn how to give and receive feedback in the best and most respectful way. Managers then attend a feedback session with their own Line Manager, who shares and walks through the feedback to identify and maximise on strengths and also build upon any development areas.

Throughout Penna’s offices they have a number of suggestion trees (PEAR Trees), which is a take on the old suggestion box. Colleagues are encouraged to write comments and leave them on the trees; these are then read out at the end of each month at the business briefing. Feedback around cutlery in the kitchens to items in the vending machines have been reported and actioned, as well as other smaller issues. Colleagues have also used this forum to raise strategic business ideas, which the company will be taking forward to identify development requirements within their team. The trees are well received by colleagues as a method of ensuring colleagues have a voice. Additionally, Penna run a number of coffee mornings where their new starters can get to know one another, as well as feedback to the Directors about their experiences with the company. There are even quarterly Directors Dinners, where the company invite the entire business over the course of the year to an evening meal held onsite. This is an opportunity to meet and get to know other people within the business in a relaxed and fun environment.
