PBL has always offered complimentary lunch to all permanent employees. Historically this was provided by a commercial third party. However in 2011 the provision was taken in house and following the involvement of VOICE the range of food was revised to create a healthier, more balanced meal, with the emphasis on fresh fruit and veg and low-fat food and less carb-heavy offerings. In the last 12 months they have set up three initiatives designed to help their staff look after themselves - a Cycle to Work scheme offering discounted bicycles, partnership with a local gym to offer various discounts and complimentary "company days" and also a Walking club during lunchtimes. In addition the company funds an employee assistance programme, "Care First", which is a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year helpline for all staff.

PBL business is at its busiest between December and January. Consequently their annual Christmas party is always held towards the middle of January. The event, to which all 270 employees are invited, is organised by VOICE - the staff consultative forum and paid for by the organisation. This year's party was the most successful ever, with a wide range of food and drink available and a variety of quizzes, games and competitions throughout the evening. The format of the evening, in particular the interactive nature of the games, gave staff whose paths do not regularly cross the opportunity to have fun together. This year the positive feeling that this event created across the organisation was tangible for a long while afterwards, at what can sometimes be a rather dreary time of year for people.

The Learn & Join In programme at PBL extends the reach of the organisational vision of Connecting People to Music through a range of projects that take place in the local community. Examples of this activity which are delivered by PBL's team include participatory music and creative sessions in local children’s centres which engage children, centre staff and families in free music activities built around the family Christmas show at Town Hall and include a supported visit to see the performance. Generation Ladywood which PBL launched this year is extending ‘Welcome Reception’ by enabling their to continue to work with these children throughout their time at school.
