Job satisfaction is certainly a term that rings true for employees at the charity Prospects for People with Learning Disabilities. According to David Bendor-Samuel, director of corporate affairs, it is the Christian ethos of the charity that is the secret to its success. “These are people who are committed to their work because of their faith and the fact that they feel they are doing something special, and this has had an impact on the sort of results we are getting,” Bendor-Samuel says. Employees say they love working for the charity, giving a 75% positive score, believe they can make a difference within the organisation (76%) and think it makes a positive difference to the world we live in (78%).

Founded in 1964, the Reading-based organisation has 60 residential homes and day opportunity centres around England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are also 180 groups made up of volunteers who provide support. Three conferences a year ensure the entire management team gets together and the 70-plus managers engage in nine days of core training every year. Staff say that managers are excellent role models (70%), regularly express their appreciation for a job well done (76%) and talk openly and honestly with them (79%).

The charity regularly analyses individual training needs and provides employees with courses both locally and nationally. Health and safety training and a Learning Disability Qualification cover the basics and NVQs as well as MA sponsorship is also available. Employees say that training is of great benefit to them (72%) and their jobs are good for personal growth (78%). They also feel a strong sense of family in their teams (75%) and say that workmates are helpful (76%) and colleagues are fun to work with (81%).
