The firm that writes Hasbro’s Action Man website believes little acts make a big impact. Pay cheques at Redwood, Europe’s leading customer communications agency, have a “thank you” from management, and the two founders sign everyone’s birthday card.

As a result, there is a strong bond between staff and managers, and a good team spirit; 83% of employees have confidence in team-mates, saying they are helpful and fun.

Redwood was founded in 1983 by Christopher Ward, a former Fleet Street editor, and Michael Potter, publishing director. Four years later, it launched Britain’s first dedicated customer publication — Marks & Spencer magazine. In 1995, Redwood launched its media arm, producing website content for clients such as Boots Dentalcare and Hasbro’s Action Man site. It is also moving into new markets, including North America and Asia.

The firm recognises good performance and rewards staff with bottles of bubbly and flowers, and the social budget is generous at £340 per employee per year. There are formal twice-yearly appraisals for staff and an open-door policy gives employees access to the management board.

All managers are offered a company car or cash alternative, as are account managers, advertising managers and controllers.

In addition, all staff are eligible for interest-free loans for travel to the company’s central London site.

Employees are encouraged to take a company pension; all have life assurance and long-term disability insurance; but only senior managers have health insurance, which covers spouses and dependants.

Maternity leave is six weeks at full pay, then 12 weeks at half pay after 12 months’ service. After three years, this increases to 12 weeks at 100% and six weeks at 50%.

There is a free company doctor, offering same-day appointments, and a subsidised masseur — another nice touch.

There are corporate events throughout the year, such as a Christmas party, carol service and pub quizzes.

A friend of the Royal Court Theatre as well as the National Portrait Gallery, the company is dedicated to fundraising throughout the year.
