Sandicliffe are fully committed to ensuring that all employees are given an appraisal annually plus 121s. Managers and supervisors have been put through training on 121s, appraisals and coaching for improved performance via the Management Development Programme. Managers are reminded of the Company deadline as it approaches and are asked to confirm the dates booked for reviews to their Operations Manager, as it is more likely to happen if it’s in the diary. The Group HR Manager monitors the returns and reports are given at these meetings. The Key Tasks and Objectives Summary for the year ahead are included in the review forms and covers future plans/focus on year ahead and aims, aspirations or plans for year ahead for the employee. Employees are asked to prepare for the meeting by completing their own form, so that they can give their own thoughts on how the year has gone, where they see themselves and are given a chance to say what they think about where they are headed.

Sandicliffe for Kidz, based on an idea from Terry Galloway, Used Car Sales Team Leader at Loughborough, who was raised as a child in care. Sandicliffe agreed to support him in putting something back in to the community. Terry gave them all an insight into one particular day of his childhood, when many local businesses came together and in a convoy of black cabs, took hundreds of children in care to Blackpool for a day out to remember. This was something that had gone on for years but sadly ended in the nineties. Inspired by this, Sandicliffe wanted to do something similar and by involving seven coaches, the group helped to raise money to take 350 children and their Carers on a day out to Alton Towers. On Friday 8th June, these seven coaches did this amidst all the wind and pouring rain but looking at all the images, nothing could dampen everyone’s spirits at the resort. Weather aside, everyone seemed to have a fantastic time.

One of the best examples relates to formulation of their Vision and values. In 2007, every employee was invited to attend a session at a local hotel facilitated by an external company to arrive at their Vision and Values. All employees had to attend a three-hour course on customer satisfaction and the training was held at hotels in Loughborough, Leicester and Nottingham. Senior Managers introduced the course and they made sure there was an Operations Manager at every session. There were 30 people per session. The aim was to create one vision and one set of values, so every colleague, customer, supplier and the community clearly understand what they want to be and how they want to do business. Their Visions and Values were then worked on and rolled out at the end 2007 or early 2008 as the result of these sessions. The employees were instrumental to formulating the Visions and Values that they are proud of.
