The Housing Association's founder, John Belcher, established the Sheffield Family Housing Association to help young homeless families after watching the BBC drama 'Cathy Come Home' in 1972.
Nearly 50 years later, and now known as South Yorkshire Housing Association; they are still providing quality local living. They design, retrofit and build homes throughout the Sheffield City Region. Their business is now more than housing with 60% of their work providing care and support to help vulnerable people remain independent.
Over 600 people contribute to the success of SYHA. From those at the forefront, working directly with customers to those keeping things going behind the scenes, they all share the same goal; to help people settle at home, live well and realise their potential.
Their people are their most important asset. They encourage and support employees to develop the skills they have and grow new ones through a range of training and development opportunities. They are passionate about learning and empower employees to push themselves and seek out opportunities to learn; be that through attending relevant events, listening to guest speaker sessions or work shadowing leaders and others across the business.
They want employees to feel good and function well, and have embedded the '5 Ways to Wellbeing' framework into their organisation as a consistent way of monitoring and improving staff wellbeing.
