About St Gemma's Hospice

St Gemma’s Hospice provide care and quality of life for people living with a terminal illness and those close to them within a hospital and in the community. Their vision is to meet the needs of its users with care, compassion and skill.

All their services are provided free of charge and employees work for St Gemma’s Hospice across their hospital and charity shops. Staff regularly organise and participate in charity events to raise funds for the hospice and the organisation participates in numerous community projects.

The chief executive has an open-door policy and is visible to all employees, undertaking regular visits to all remote sites. Individual wellbeing plans are made for staff with caring responsibilities and the hospice is a member of the Leeds-based Working Carers Employers Group. They are the largest hospice in Yorkshire and one of the biggest in the UK.

What is it like to work for St Gemma's Hospice

The Chief Executive has an open-door policy and is accessible to staff throughout the organisation, including regular visits to all hospice sites and attendance at events. She updates staff with a monthly bulletin and has a quarterly ‘Question Time’ session on important issues.

Sustainability runs throughout their values. They have replaced PCs with more energy-efficient equipment; encouraged water-efficient practices; introduced on-site recycling for books, clothes and more; installed LED lighting; and removed disposable cups from the bistro.

So much so that the organisation’s culture, values and behaviours were agreed upon together in a whole-staff workshop. What’s more, a new hospice strategy for the next ten years has been finalised.
