Mission: To be a sustainable, growing and profitable business with a proper reward for Partners and Staff, with the ability to continue to invest in the business for the long term. Vision: To be the number one legal business for client service in our chosen markets in the South West, delivering a turnover in excess of £20m by April 2017.
A GENEROUS EMPLOYEE ownership scheme is one reason Stephens Scown was voted UK Law Firm of the Year at the 2016 British Legal Awards. Founded in 1938, the Exeter-based practice provides legal advice to individuals and organisations in the southwest. When it offered staff a 50% share of any additional profits above target last year, eligible individuals each received a £3,000 bonus — up 131% on the previous year.
Managing partner Robert Camp introduced the scheme and employees agree he runs the firm on sound moral principles, which include integrity, friendliness and dynamism, giving an 84% positive score for this question. They also have confidence in the leadership skills of the senior management team (85%).
The 288-strong workforce, divided between head office and other offices in Truro and St Austell, is encouraged to engage with local communities by attending events in the corporate camper van, pictured below. Photos are then shared on the organisation’s Instagram page, tagging social media campaigns such as Love Where You Live.
An employee’s suggestion that the firm produce a branded reusable coffee cup resulted in £2.50 being donated to the Children’s Hospice South West for each one sold.
