Stephens Scown are a law firm that provides legal advice to individuals and organisations in the South West of England.

With three offices - in Exeter, Truro and St Austell - 270 employees and 50 partners, they are committed above all to the people and the businesses in the local area.

The firm’s core values are centred around the following six concepts: integrity, being friendly, being reliable, being supportive, being dynamic, and being commercial.

In May 2016, Stephens Scown introduced a shared ownership profit scheme, meaning their employees own part of the business and share in 50 per cent of additional profits over and above their published profit target figure. Members of the scheme are known as ‘Scowners’ and the trustees, elected by their staff, also came up with a special logo and strapline ‘There’s no place like Scown’.

The company is led by Managing Partner Robert Camp, who is described as being hands on, spending time to regularly interact with staff at all levels and spend time in each office.

The HR Director makes weekly visits to each office to provide a drop-in “clinic” for staff. Employees also have access to a corporate gym membership, and they are offered lunchtime activities including pilates, art classes, two choirs, and a carers’ support group.

The Managing Partner holds regular roadshows to present up-to-date information on the business and any projects that are being rolled out, as well as enabling staff to ask him any questions. The Managing Partner also has regular get togethers with different staff groups.

Staff have the opportunity to be part of a ‘groundbreaking’ profit-sharing bonus scheme called “Scownership”, where every member of staff receives a payment of over £3,000 by way of profit share at the end of the financial year.
