Stonewater are a social housing provider with more than 31,000 homes across England and deliver good quality, affordable homes to those in need. Their values include being ethical, ambitious, agile, commercial and passionate. These principles are embedded in employees’ personal development plans so that the workforce is constantly focussing on achieving the organisation’s vision.

An annual staff conference brings everyone together from across 85 sites around the country and the most recent event focussed on how the organisation was demonstrating its core values in line with business goals.

Their chief executive hosts regular ‘brown bag lunches’, where employees are selected at random and invited for an informal lunch and to ask questions about all elements of their work. The senior management team is also required to demonstrate that they are a values-led organisation with ambitious goals. Stonewater now has more than 65,000 customers.

The leadership model starts with a 360 feedback process, including a 360 coach. It’s a six-month programme in four modules, with participants working in learning sets. Performance is measured through the Personal Development Review (PDR) process. Objectives have a clear relation to the organisational objectives.

A Leadership Development Programme is supported by 360 feedback and Insights Discovery tools. A four-day immersive training course takes line managers through the challenges of managing a team for 12 months. Facilitators play the characters for the learner to interact with.

Team Talks see employees gather at their local office for updates and presentations on key topics, such as company performance or the launch of the People Strategy. They conclude with Nice Box updates, where employees leave thank you notes for colleagues who’ve helped them.
