About University of Surrey Students' Union

The University of Surrey Students' Union is the sole representative body for students - both undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Surrey.

The Union is led by a team of five full-time sabbatical officers and 21 part-time student officers who are all elected annually by Students' Union members through an online ballot.

They have a wellbeing culture where people can come and express their feelings to either their line manager or direct to the HR Manager. Those in distress have the opportunity to refer people to a counselling service provided for staff on the University campus that can assist immediately.

They have also worked closely with local residents and created a new system where students are representatives for their local community in Guildford. This has started to build bridges with local residents, who at times, find living alongside students challenging and difficult.

A member of staff who volunteers for the police was given the opportunity to take a two-week emergency response driving course. They got time off and were allowed to check in with work emails during the evening.

An online platform, Staff Savvy, allows for better team communication. In addition, Microsoft Teams allows staff to collaborate, meet online and exchange ideas. External speakers came in for the annual strategy day to talk about relevant issues, while teambuilding took place last year at a Music Motivational Event.

There are no desk wastebins and everyone is encouraged to recycle. Offices have movement sensor lights. A Get Giving campaign supports a local food bank, while free community-based events include visits to an open-air cinema, tea dances and a sleepout to raise the issue of homelessness.
